What the calculator is measuring

WHAT IF turns a simple retrospective question into a comparable market result: if the same dollar amount had been used to buy one asset on a past date, what would those units be worth today? The calculation uses the entry price at the start of the chosen horizon, the latest available price, and the number of units that original investment would have bought.

Consistent scenarios

Each run keeps the amount and time horizon fixed so crypto, gold, stocks, ETFs, and indices can be compared on the same basis. That makes the result easier to read than a chart full of unrelated time ranges.

Real market sources

Crypto prices and gold use Binance market feeds where available. Stocks, ETFs, and indices use Yahoo Finance history through a cached API, with adjusted close data used where the source provides it.

Known limitations

Results are simplified illustrations. They exclude trading fees, spreads, slippage, taxes, staking rewards, dividends not captured by adjusted close data, and the practical difficulty of buying at an exact historical close.

The numbers are educational and backward-looking. They are useful for understanding volatility, drawdowns, and opportunity cost, but they are not investment advice and do not predict future returns. See the methodology and FAQ for more detail.
