About
What is WHAT IF?
Everyone has had the thought: "What if I'd bought that a year ago?" WHAT IF turns that thought into a concrete number. Pick an asset, a starting amount, and a time frame — and we'll show you, using real market prices, what your bag would be worth today.
Why we built it
Most return calculators are spreadsheets dressed up as forms — slow, ugly, and joyless. We wanted the opposite: something fast, visual, and a little bit fun. The kind of tool you screenshot and send to a friend with "look what we missed." WHAT IF charts the curve, ranks assets side by side on a leaderboard, and updates with live prices so the number you see is the number right now.
What it does
- Time-machine math. Enter an amount and a horizon (1 month to 5 years) and see today's value, profit/loss, return %, units held, and entry vs. current price.
- Side-by-side leaderboard. Compare crypto, gold, and major stock indices over the same window to see what actually won.
- Live and historical data. Prices come from public market sources and refresh automatically.
- Shareable results. Generate an image and a deep link so others can open the exact same scenario.
A growing series
"What if I bought $100 a year ago?" is just the first question. WHAT IF is built as a series — future editions will explore questions like what if I never sold, what if I bought the dip every month, or what if I'd invested my paycheck. The goal is the same throughout: make financial "what ifs" tangible, visual, and honest.
How we stay honest
We show real data and we're upfront about its limits. Our figures are simplified illustrations that exclude fees, spreads, taxes, and other real-world costs — read the full methodology for exactly how the numbers are built. WHAT IF is informational and entertainment software, not financial advice; see our terms & disclaimer.
How it stays free
WHAT IF is free to use and supported by advertising. We don't require accounts and we don't sell your data — see the privacy policy for details.
